I was reading an Es...Welcome to my blogspot, Bill.

I was reading an Esperanto this morning and my grandson (10) told me that he saw a movie where Esperanto was used as a language. I explained to him that Esperanto is not a language by any specific country or ethnic group. It was formulated by L.L. Zamenhof to avoid prejudice, hostility, etc. when communicating to people from other countries.

He told me it is a "neutral" language. I responded that this could be the best way to go when global people keep on making a "fuss" as to whose language is the best.

English have borrowed so many words from other languages (French, Latin, Greek, etc. for root words, affixation, etc.)

Esperanto, likewise, have "collected" root words from Spanish, English, and from other European languages. To make it simplier and easier to remember, morphology had been simplified. Singular nouns only have a suffix /o/ as opposed to Spanish /o/ and /a/ for masculine and feminine.

Comparatively, Esperanto, like any other language, takes some time to master. The affixes may be simple, but the root words may not be. What root word should I use: English, Spanish, etc.? I cannot just use "bigo" for big, because Esperanto uses "grando" from "grande". As an English speaker, who also is literate in Spanish, I could have an option to be understood by Esperanto speakers. However, many people are still monolingual. For them, it would still be painful to learn.

Dr. Patricia Schneider-Zioga of California State Univ.-Fullerton has a reason why she considers Filipino as an artificial language. I will be explaining her response to Jannelle So, host of Kababayan LA of KSCI-TV (Ch. 18), in my next blog.

Hope you'll check it out next week.

Again, thank you very much for the comment.

EdmundGALI Ed Writeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14101544722801913324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1485211128124683853.post-43490124053427785632009-06-23T02:20:21.923-07:002009-06-23T02:20:21.923-07:00I'm a native speaker of English, but I see a n...I'm a native speaker of English, but I see a need for a neutral relatively easy international language. However, a few of my friends are so "tight" on nationalism that they get very narrow-minded with how they see things; vis-a-vis, because it is a Filipino program, Kababayan should speak in Filipino, guests should also speak in Filipino, etc.

Well, I spoke Tagalog when I first guested on Kababayan LA. Since I am not a native Tagalog speaker, I have heavy accent. One of my friends suggested that I should speak in English, the next time around. This tells you that not all Kababayan LA followers are not happy with your response. Perhaps many might not be happy with Jannelle and me, because we spoke English throughtout the program. But hey, Jannelle and I spoke in English, because the situation called for it. The viewers should understand that.

Also, I take more of the blame for not reinforcing your example with a situation in the Philippines. I actually thought about talking about it during commercials; however, I wasn't able to. You know, we, guests, have to rely on a cue. So, when Jannelle opened the next segment with another question, my thought process was mess up. It should have been great, if I was able to do that, because we could have addressed the question from a general point of view to the specific, or from the least known to a common (Phil.) example. My bad!

I will be blogging on dialect and diglossia on weekend. Hope you'd check it out.

Thank you, Patricia, for guesting on Kababayan LA. If not with the issues we talked about in the program, I could have not thought of blogging on Philippine languages.

Hope to hear from you again.

Sincerely,

EdmundGALI Ed Writeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14101544722801913324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1485211128124683853.post-74904151879881301942009-06-11T10:03:59.129-07:002009-06-11T10:03:59.129-07:00An email I received from Dr. Schneider-Zioga:

One reason I thought it best to not use examples based on languages and dialects in the Philippines is the fact that people would not clearly agree on what is a language versus a dialect. However, no one would dispute Dutch and German being different langauges (whereas Kapampangan and Tagalog being different languages would be disputed). Nonetheless, my husband also criticized my examples! He is from Greece and has experienced a diglossic situation there with Katharevousa (the "clean" language) and Demotiki (the "people's language"). This did however really help him understand what some of the situation might be like in the Philippines. I will look at your blog as well! Not all people are in Skid Row, because of extravagance and addiction. Some are there, because of mental illness and the nuclear and extended families have given up on them. A few older folks were dropped off surreptitiously by local hospitals, because they either have nobody to contact when they were ready to be released or do not have any more funds to help defray medical bills. See the picture, which I posted here, where two African Americans are standing? That woman on the background and was trying to cross the street was pushing her wheelchair. Nobody helped her. I have to run back after I took the picture to help her. She was so pale as if she just got out of the hospital. I did not ask her age, but I think she's in her 80s. I was glad that a mission agency has taken her in. If not, then who will help her out?

A little help means a lot to the destitute and the needy. Even just to show God's love to them means a lot. After we crossed the street, this woman touched me with her frail shaking hands and said, "You're the first one, who helped me cross this fr----ng street. Thank you."

God bless, Earlene.

Posted by edmund on June 7, 2009 - Sunday - 3:27 PMGALI Ed Writeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14101544722801913324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1485211128124683853.post-80426215219473944922009-06-07T15:28:30.183-07:002009-06-07T15:28:30.183-07:00This comment came from another link:
